Maltese Sign Language Course
A course in Maltese Sign Language (MSL) – Level 1 was organised for the second time by the Gozo Association for the Deaf (G.A.D.) following a request from a few members, teachers and LSAs in both the Gozo College and Church Schools. Consequently, the G.A.D. approached the Parliamentary Secretariat for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing to sponsor this course.
The course which took place at the Centre of the G.A.D., was spread over several weeks covering ten sessions of three hours each. It started on 3rd July 2017 and ended on 19th September 2017 with an exam. Sixteen participants ended this course successfully.
Feedback from the participants was highly positive and they would like to attend another MSL course at Level 2. All of them showed great interest and practised very hard both at home and as a group at the G.A.D. Centre to prepare themselves for the successive sessions.
On a final note, the running of this course was extremely useful to arouse awareness on the need of MSL to gain recognition as a language per se, so as to facilitate communication between hearing and hearing impaired persons in Malta and Gozo.
The G.A.D. is very grateful to the Parliamentary Secretariat for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing for sponsoring this course thus making it possible to offer it free of charge. The outcome of both this course and the previous one held in 2016 was very encouraging and the G.A.D. will soon be working on organising the MSL Level 2 course.
